20 Ways to change your thinking about worry

Worry: give way to anxiety or unease; allow one’s mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles.

We all have dealt with worry one way or the other. We worry for ourselves, we worry for others and somehow over a period of time we begin to worry ourselves to death about everything.  There are many reasons why we may worry, it can be job related, family, financial, physical, school, kids, and the list can go on and on.  We as people have allowed worry to suck the joy out of our lives. We spend so much time worrying about what could go wrong, that we are blind to the many things that are going right in our lives.  We allow worry to keep us in fear, and  stop us from pushing  ourselves to the next level of growth or change in our lives.   We allow worry to sometimes keep us up at night, take our focus off of what is important, and create a overwhelming anxiety within ourselves.

Somehow, worry becomes  a natural part of our everyday lives ; stemming from the time that we wake up until we lay our heads to rest; we constantly worry about what is going to happen next.

If we do not learn how to gain control of this worry it can go raging out of control. It can begin to control our very being, and also start to make us physically sick.

Have you ever had someone you know be called a ” worry wart”  which is defined as a person who tends to dwell unduly on difficulty or troubles? We all have at least  one of these people in our lives or could possibly be one ourselves. Mine, happens to be my mother; she is constantly worrying about things that have never happened, will never happen, or just worrying for no reason. I see that it bogs her down, how worry fogs her heart and mind. It seems as though she is stressed to the max because she is worrying about things that she cant control.

We can allow the worry of others to transfer to ourselves if we are not careful. That is not to say that I myself do not worry sometimes, because I do. However, I do not consider myself to be a worry wart. I also want to get to the point in my life where I do not worry at all. I want to actually enjoy life rather than make up these absurd  reasons in my head about what I can or can not do, or what will or will not happen.

So, this morning when I was doing my morning devotion I stumbled across the topic of worry, as I am just so happening to be studying about trust.  During this devotion time, I came across  these verses in Matthew 6:25-34

Matthew 6:25-34 New International Version (NIV)

Do Not Worry

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

I really talked to God about what exactly was he trying to tell me at this moment in my life. I couldn’t help but to notice and see that the biggest thing he was telling me was to trust and have faith. Through learning to trust God and have faith in God and who he is, the worrying will cease to exist. Now, this isn’t just a piece of cake to actually do. This is going to take a lot of patience as well as practice in order to stop yourself from doing what has been habit possibly for you. I can say however, that a WORRY FREE life is very possible. I believe that this is possible because God himself tells us not to worry, which to me implies that we can in fact live a life free from worry. So, I then begin to dig a little deeper into this verse to see what exactly does this verse tell me about God, worry, about myself, and interpret anything else that I can use and imply to my life and help others learn to imply it to their lives as well.

I  Have found so far  within this verse and quiet time at least 20 things that will help with worry. I plan to touch way more on this subject, but these 20 things will at least be a start for you as well as for myself.

20 ways To Bibically and Practically change your thinking about worry

1. Having Faith and Trust in God , seeking his kingdom first

( Trying to handle it on your own and seeking out your own answers)

I love that verse 33 tells us upfront that if we seek Gods kingdom first, all the things that we are needing and possibly even want will be given to us. We often times neglect our time with God, because we are too busy trying to figure things out on our own, or creating our own busy schedules that we fail to go to God first or at all. We seek after things thinking that’s going to be the answer, and then when its not we get upset at God or ourselves because of the result of all of our own doings. What we need to do is just trust and have Faith that if we focus on what God wants for us, if we give God time before we give time to anything else; that he will in fact give us what it is we think we need, even better he will give us what he has for us; which is far greater than what we could ever do for ourselves.  But we need to have an understanding that apart from God we can do nothing, and anything done in our own strengths will not last. Which is why we should go to God first, with what issues that we maybe having in our life, or even the issues we think will happen in our lives. ( see these verses Click Me )

Focus on one day at a time, and one task at a time

2.We sometimes have the tendency to bog ourselves down with to- do list, that can expand beyond just doing things for ourselves, such as; jobs, kids, spouse, family, church, community, or volunteering and etc. Then within each one of these categories there seems to be smaller list, and then imagine if you have more than one kid, or if you are committed to more than one thing in the community and volunteering. Before we know it, we have overwhelmed and overloaded ourselves with these task some strenuous and some not but all taking affect on our emotional state ( causing worry and stress ). This then leads to some of us quitting, getting down and depressed. If you dont get down and depressed your probably extremely tired and cant give as much of yourself into as much as you wanted. So, the point is I believe we sometimes allow that worry to drive us to do these to- do list everyday. Whatever the reason driving that worry whether its you trying to be self-ambitious or trying to prove to be prominent to the next person, or that you really just want to chase your dreams or make it out the struggle for your kids. Bottom line is  you will never get there faster trying to rush, or worrying about what the next day or future may bring.  Therefore  by focusing one day at a time you will be able to LIVE IN THE MOMENT  for the day your living in, realizing that worrying about the next day is not going to make anything happen any faster. By doing this you will truly be able to have a inner happiness and peace. Matthew 6 Verse 34 said it best, (34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.)

3. Don’t look at what others are doing or what is happening in others life.

If you look at verse (32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them). We as society put a lot of focus on groups which just end up dividing us socially, creating stereotypes and other ridiculous judgement. But, we wont touch on that to much right now. I more so want to touch on the fact that we as a society our pressured to have to fit in, to have to look a certain way, or have  certain materialistic items , status, money and the list goes on and on. There are plenty of people that have an abundance, some in between, and some who dont have enough. Yet, despite the differences in means or other differentiates we all look to compete with the next person. We compete with people within our own social status, community, families, and then also compete with people outside of our circles as well. This can create worry for us because we are constantly trying to keep up with what the next person has, or what the world itself through media and other outlets try to make us think we need. The greatest example of this being technology, apple has been able to upgrade small things each year and each year people are spending more money, going crazy, getting it because such and such has it, or getting it because the media tells us that we need to have the hottest new thing out. ( Nothing against iphone, and this is not by far the only example of whats done in society today to try to mold who we are).  We can get so consumed in this that we can let it change our attitudes about others as well as ourselves, causing us to become bitter towards others, and then beat ourselves up because we dont have or we feel inadequate to others life.

I believe Jesus makes a good point in verse 32, reminding us that the pagans, which is basically ungodly, and worldly people who  chase after the things of this world.  It is because they are chasing this world that  it does cause worry, stress, and etc. I love how Jesus reminds us that its not about chasing after the hottest new thing or keeping up with the next person, I know he doesn’t say this exactly but I feel he does when he says that

” Your heavenly father knows that you need them”.

Meaning to have Faith and Trust in God, take life a day at a time, look at your own life, and not at others….. because God already knows what you need before you need it. We have to let go of thinking we must have it instantaneous, and thats not how it works all the time. After all to me, the most beautiful, unfiltered, and natural things are the ones we cant get instantaneously.

( I can account for times when I was done to my last and had little to nothing to my name. Worry tried to sneak its way in, and almost had me feeling defeated but instead I choose…God, Faith, Struggle )

4. Remember that Your Life is More Important than Material Things

If you take a look at our world today, there is just a overloaded emphasis on material things, living the American dream, money, money and money.  We are constantly facing temptation and billion dollar companies trying to lure us in and take our money for things that there telling us we need or we buy to keep up with the next.  We let this affect us so much that some people try to get these things in a bad way, robbing, stealing, going in to debt, screwing people over etc  and some people try to get it a legit way like a job or a positive side hustle such as delivering newspapers.

The thing is though whether good or bad, we all to extent have fallen victim to letting materialistic things get the best of us. We now have begin to wrap our identity based on the things we have verses the person that we are inwardly. I believe that because we lack inwardly we use that to make us cover it up with what we have outwardly.  There are some who will go broke trying to maintain an image they really cant afford.  We just have got to start being greater than what this world tries to tell us that we need in order to have happiness or in order to be ourselves. Trying to be something we are not, buying things we cant afford just creates a bigger worry for us. Even if its not the money you are worrying about, you still have something that you are worrying about that could hurt what you have materialistically.

Matthew verse 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’

This verse just cuts to the simple truth. There is no need to worry about what you will eat or drink, really anything for that matter.  It is  because you are choosing  worrying about these things that  Jesus upfront tells us “thee of little faith” ( depends on what version you read). This to me implies that when we are worrying, we are not exhibiting faith. Faith and worry are the complete opposite. Faith is believing in what your eyes can not see, and worry is constantly finding difficulty or negativity because of whats in front of your eyes.  So, we should remember that we are more than just materialistic things, and that our value does not lie in what we have but truly in Christ. The person that we are within, not what we have on the outside.   If you are not happy with the person you are on the inside, or there is things in the past you need to come to grips with learn to communicate that in prayer but also seek to Change  that.  Lets  Decrease trying to keep up materialistically and learn instead to have Faith in God and in doing so surpassing any amount of materialistic things you could ever have.

5&6 Remember that worry does nothing to increase your life, and 85% of worry is just illusions we make up or allow others to plant in our heads

We waste a lot of time worrying about things that could go wrong, thinking about what others have to say, or any other outrageous things we try to tell ourselves or have allowed others to tell us. The biggest example of this is the media, they are constantly pushing negative information into our minds to create fear, worry , and control. It seems as though the worry and fear into today’s world is normal.  Creating, to me a lot of unhappy, and fearful people. But, nonetheless we must not Live In Fear and  we must have a growing knowledge above what the world claims.  Verse 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]? Reality, is that we will all have a dying day and no one knows how, all we can do is choose to believe or not, and have faith in something greater. We sit here worrying and having fear, allowing the enemy to stop us from fulfilling our true potential that is only secure through believing, having faith in a relationship with Jesus Christ, but its because we allow the enemy and many other  deferments limit us that we end up allowing it to make us settle, not see truth, and dislike truth. (Read Me). There is no need for worry if you have faith in the Alpha and Omega.   Remember that its through him all things are POSSIBLE.

Did you know that 85% of what we worry about is not true. Change your mindset by remembering that worrying is going to do nothing but make it worst, and what your worrying about is false until proven right  and adds nothing to your life but instead takes away. . 7&8 Know that God is your provider and be patient with God and your life

We get ourselves all worked up over not having materialistic things, not being where we want in life,( I am guilty of doing this) not getting our way and so on; that we create worry and anxiety for ourselves. We try to handle our wants and needs on our own, or we try to run to others for help. We do this, only to see that they in fact and we in fact are let down. We have tried to go to and fill the void of what we need with everything except the very thing that will not only provide for us materialistically but do so much for our souls that we can imagine or even fathom. We have the creator of the universe as our Savior, and our Guidance; yet we dont go to him first.

Verse 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

Start seeing the fact that God is your provider that he cares about your wants and your needs. You must first however take it to him, and when you take it to him leave it there. Trust his timing and trust that he has the greatest plans for your life, and that he loves you even more than you love you.  Check out these verses as well ( ProviderPromises)

9&10 Prayer can help worry & we can not control every aspect of our lives or others.

I know that we have all heard that saying that prayer changes everything right? Well, that is so true. I can feel the difference within myself when I  pray about things verse when I try to handle them on my own or rely on someone else. Prayer can bring us peace, healing, blessings, understanding and so much more. I know you also probably heard of that saying speak life or existence into the things that we want in our lives? Right? ( If so comment and let me know below in the comment section :).

Well, I feel when we choose to pray to God first about things that maybe troubling our mind, we are speaking life into that situation. The more we pray about the situation, or even just speak  good things in our life and believe in who God is and what our relationship with him is,  I cant see why those things wouldn’t come  into manifestation.  However, we sometimes even doing this still fail to realize that does not always mean we get everything we want, or even when we want it. First, we still have to remember that God IS IN CONTROL, and secondly that God does everything for a reason, sometimes what we want is not happening or has happened  for a reason we may never know.  There’s alot of things within this fallen world were we wont have the answer to. But who are we to try to take the place of God? Why do we second guess God who has never left or forsaken us, yet we have turned away from his word because of not being able to control or being mislead by this world.

You attract the vibes that you send out sometimes. If you are constantly worrying about something bad happening, you could actually speak life into that negative thing happening in your life. So, its best to just take it to God and ask for ease and peace of mind verses continue to speak of reasons to worry.  We have to remember that we CAN NOT control everything. We as humans have to try to control every aspect of our lives, as well as sometimes try to control what others are doing. But this does nothing but create more worry and anxiety for us because when we are unable to control things, dont understand, or feel inferior we begin to worry more. Worrying more can lead to a lot of unhealthy emotions, habits, or choices that we don’t need in, our lives, that God doesn’t want in our lives, but the devil enjoys us doing.

The key is to realize that God is under control, and that you need to let go of control and let God have it in order to grow and rise above the enemy. Remembering and knowing that it will never be done on your own strength. (Trust,Prayer,ControlDeceive,Strength)

The Next 10 are a little more Practical Ways

11. Pray about everything

12. Talk to someone you trust,  if you dont have anyone close look into a therapist, someone at church, forums and etc

13. Think about all the energy and time you waste on worry. Instead channel this energy doing something that relieves stress such as exercise, writing, playing with children( I have kids) , listening to music and really anything positive and uplifting

14. Take deep breaths, remembering to breath will remind you to live in the moment

15.Change your thought pattern, one thought at a time . As soon as you get a negative thought emerging, immediately defeat that with a positive one

16. Go with the flow of life, learn to just be and be still. Sometimes we get so busy that we disconnect from ourselves. Take the time to mediate in silence.

17. Make a list of the things that you can do and remember to pray about the ones that you cant

18. Think about and write all the reasons you have to be grateful. If we focus  more on being thankful for what we do have we wouldn’t worry about what we dont

19. Read books with more helpful strategies.

Never stop learning new tactics and seeking knowledge. (some suggestions from amazon, and google) Feel free to actually look  for the books by  checking with your free local library if they have it before purchasing or check your local small business book store that may have some a lot cheaper or go even more frugal and check your local thrift store) .Whatever the time or budget there is a book and resources out there for you, you just have to seek it.

20. Remember that life is short, why waste it when you can enjoy it!!!! Find at least 1 thing each day to find joy, and find every reason to trust God, and not worry about anything.

I hope some of these will at least give some type of light on worry, this is a subject I will touch a lot more on. We all are guilty of worry, but we all dont want to see it, or some cant see it. I dont know about you but I am done wasting my life worrying about everything.

I am learning to let go and let God take control, not be afraid to say that I am a believer, not being afraid to walk a different path. Just because the world is dark doesn’t mean that you  dim the light inside you that God has given you for a reason. Learning to let go of the hurt of people, and trust that God is not like man. (GOD)
